COMMUNION TWICE A DAY

Q. 1. Can a person receive the Sacrament of the Holy Eucharist more than once a day?

A. 1. Yes, a Catholic can receive the Sacrament of the Holy Eucharist more than once a day.

In 1984, the Pontifical Council for the Interpretation of Legislative Texts was asked, in accordance with Canon Law # 917, if a Catholic could receive the Holy Eucharist only two times in one day, or could he receive it as many times as he attends Mass in that day. So if he attends three Masses, can he receive Holy Communion three times?

The Council replied that a person can receive Holy Communion two times in one day if he attends two Holy Mass, but no more.

Note: This is apart from receiving Holy Communion in the Sacrament of the dying.

In other words, if you went to Holy Mass in the morning, you can receive Holy Communion. If you went to another Mass in the afternoon, you can receive Holy Communion a second time. If that evening you had a heart attack and the priest was called to give you the Last Rites (Sacrament of the dying) (Canon Law # 921 2), you can receive Holy Communion a third time.
